Vienna – Naschmarkt

The Naschmarkt is a famous local market along a river in Vienna, where a variety of restaurants, food and souvenirs of international cuisine are sold. Most of the vendors are Turkish. The cheese stalls are quite colorful.

It is possible to see many ripened and seasoned cheeses in these stalls. I had the opportunity to spend a long time at a stall where the seller was Turkish. Mr. Engin told me that the Gouda and emmental cheeses on the stall were traditionally produced in fresh and ripened form by local producers on the Austrian-Swiss border, and that they mostly contain bovine milk.

The unique flora of the Alpine Mountains creates the palate-pleasing flavor of the cheeses. What attracted my attention the most was that gouda cheese is produced by adding condiments such as lavender, basil, hibiscus, black lemon, etc.Especially hibiscus is widely used as a natural food coloring in Vienna’s exquisite cakes and olives, as well as in cheeses. The comfort of emmental cheese matured in wine was what impressed me the most.In Vienna, they consume this type of cheese with wine and fruits. Despite the high prices, you can see many people walking around the market with a piece of cheese and wine in their hands.
